Vancouver, BC
Since 1990, Vancouver’s English Bay has transformed three midsummer nights into a canvas of color during the Celebration of Light, the world’s longest-running musical offshore fireworks competition. Originally called Symphony of Fire, the event was conceived to marry pyrotechnics with a synchronised musical score broadcast on local radio.Honda became title sponsor in 2011, but the format remains pure: nations vie for bragging rights by choreographing 25-minute displays that rise more than 300 meters above the bay.
Among Lower Mainland residents, the festival inspires a ritualistic migration to the sand. By the end of the festival, more than one million spectators have staked out blankets along the shore from Sunset Beach to Kits Point. Local press routinely ranks the Celebration of Light as British Columbia’s single most-attended cultural event, ahead of even the Vancouver International Film Festival, and tourism agencies pitch the fireworks as a signature summer draw for international visitors. Unlike Canada Day displays that run once and disperse, this competition plays out over a full week, allowing gourmands to pair evenings on the beach with Stanley Park picnics or West End tasting menus.
The 2025 edition illuminates the sky on July 19th, 23rd, and 26th. In a first, all three teams hail from Canada. Midnight Sun Fireworks of Yukon opens with an aurora-inspired palette of greens and violets; Montréal’s famed Hands Fireworks follows with a medley set to Québécois icons from Arcade Fire to Leonard Cohen; Vancouver-based Archangel Fireworks closes the series with a “Pacific Tides” program that mirrors the bay’s famed pink-orange sunsets. Each show begins promptly at 10 p.m., but the on-shore festival activates mid-afternoon with gourmet food trucks, a Granville Island Brewing beach garden and live indie sets on the Z-95 Beach Stage. Music simulcasts will air on Breeze 104.3 FM and through a time-synced mobile app so boaters anchored beyond the marine safety zone can follow every crescendo.
