Paiko Retreat, a restored coastal estate near Paiko Lagoon on Oʻahu, has been listed for $13.8 million. The property sits beside one of Honolulu’s protected natural settings, with shoreline habitat and historic Hawaiian fishpond systems nearby.

The home was designed in 1983 by Hawaii architect John Hara, whose work includes the Honolulu Museum of Art and the University of Hawaiʻi–West Oʻahu. His design includes open-beam ceilings and broad indoor-outdoor transitions throughout.

Current owners Karin and Walter Sousa spent four years restoring the property from 2020 to 2024. Walter Sousa is a retired business executive who held senior leadership roles at AT&T, Hewlett-Packard, and Pacific Internet. The restoration kept Hara’s original architectural intent intact, preserving open-beam ceilings, restoring finishes, and adding custom millwork that works with the home’s original design.

The residence spans roughly 10,000 square feet and includes a dedicated primary wing with private sitting areas, four guest bedrooms with ensuite baths, a custom glass elevator, media room, family room, and private offices. Across the home, interior spaces open to broad lanais and outdoor living areas.

The grounds span more than an acre, with mature landscaping, garden paths, and quiet outdoor areas woven throughout the property. Kanewai Spring runs through the property, feeding koi ponds and cascading water features before continuing toward Paiko Lagoon.

For the Sousas, the home became both a residence and a restoration project. They are now preparing to return to the beachfront in Kailua while looking for their next property to restore, leaving behind a home shaped by Hara’s architecture and their careful preservation.
