January in the Coachella Valley has its own rhythm—measured mornings, clear afternoons, and a calendar that reliably brings professional golf back to the desert. From January 19–25, that rhythm centers on The American Express, with tournament play running January 22–25 across a familiar rotation of courses in La Quinta, California.
The American Express is played as a 72-hole tournament using a three-course rotation, a format that asks players to adapt quickly rather than settle into a single rhythm. Rounds are shared between Pete Dye Stadium Course at PGA WEST, the Nicklaus Tournament Course, and La Quinta Country Club before the final round returns to the Stadium Course on Sunday. The variety is intentional: Dye’s angular, water-lined challenge contrasts with the more open Nicklaus design and La Quinta’s traditional parkland feel, giving the week a layered sense of place.

The tournament also retains its long-standing pro-am format, a reminder of its roots as a more accessible stop on the PGA TOUR schedule. The week typically draws a mix of established TOUR winners and rising contenders early in the season, using the desert stop as a chance to build momentum before the calendar accelerates.
